ON WEDDINGS: ”I love what I read about Pam Love’s wedding in Montauk. It was the perfect combination of natural and cool. The best wedding I ever attended was my friend, Lulu’s. It was super small, only twenty guests, on the California coast. At one point, hang-gliders swooped in from the distance. It was magical.”
ON GETTING MARRIED IN THE MOVIES: “I did a couple of movies where I got married. Fictionally, I’ve been married a lot. You pick out a dress, walk down the aisle, and say 'I do' — it’s a really good test drive. I remember I hated the wedding dress I had to wear in this one movie. I just thought it was awful, and that no one in their right mind would wear it. But then I saw the dress on screen and thought it looked great. It was a 50's-style bell-shaped bodice dress. Very classic, goody good girl-type look. I keep that in mind now. Even though I’d totally want to wear a cool, asymmetrical Yohji Yamamoto sack."
ON STYLE: "I’m really into jewelry, especially vintage. I have this huge crocodile ring of my grandma’s that she brought here from Cuba back in the day. I’m obsessed with it. Style-wise, my biggest inspiration is the Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven. She was a muse of the Dada artists and sort of credited, alongside Marcel Duchamp, with starting the found object sculpture movement. She made her own clothes and would cut a Campbell’s tomato soup can into a bra or wear a birdcage on her head... Also, of course, Diana Vreeland."
ON HER FANTASY WEDDING: "I would have loved to attend the wedding of giant/giantess couple, Anna Swan and Martin Van Buren Bates, in 1871. They met on a circus tour and fell in love. They were famous in that time for being so big. I’d wear an insane Alexander McQueen dress and bring Tilda Swinton as my date."
ON DATING: “I’m a little old-fashioned. I think if a person wants to go out with you, they should actually ask you out on a date. I hate when people are like, “oh lets hang out,”– huge red flag. I like a person who asks you out politely and gently and thoughtfully, with that confidence of someone who’s brave and knows what they want. I’ve found that people who are upfront like that, even if the date doesn’t work out, are always people I’d rather know or spend time with than the wishy-washy, flaky types who keep you guessing or waiting. Dating actors is really the same as dating other people, despite the stereotypes, although it can make scheduling a little tricky. One of my favorite dates was a night we got all dressed up and went to the ballet, and then rushed to a sports bar to catch the Pacquiao fight. The contrast, the thrill, and the surprise were a rush. Boxing and ballet are both so fierce and sexual, I was giddy. One of my worst dates was a blind date. We met at the movies, and as soon as the movie started he fell fast asleep!”
BEST LOVE BOOK: "'Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair’ by Pablo Neruda. One of the most romantic books I have ever read on marriage, or commitment to relationship, is ‘Patriotism’ by Yukio Mishima.”
BEST LOVE SONG: “‘This Old Guitar' by John Denver.”
